UPDATE: More road closures due to winter weather in eastern Idaho
Published at | Updated at
IDAHO FALLS — The Idaho Transportation Department has now closed three local highways due to severe winter weather conditions.
At around 12:30 p.m. Friday, ITD closed Idaho Highway 32 from Ashton to Tetonia and Idaho Highway 47 from Ashton to Warm River. Just before 5 p.m., ITD closed Idaho Highway 33 from Newdale to Tetonia.
Authorities report significant blowing and drifting snow with very low visibility on all three highways.
According to the Rexburg Police Department, strong winds are causing whiteout conditions on city roads on the south end of town. Poleline Road in Rexburg is currently closed from 5th West to Millhollow Road. Authorities say extreme winds have made it very difficult to mark the road closures properly since the signs keep blowing away.
The highways and roads are all expected to reopen as conditions improve.
According to the National Weather Service, that section of eastern Idaho — near Madison, Fremont and Teton counties — is under a winter weather advisory until 11 p.m. Friday. Two to four inches of snow is expected, with winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
