ST. ANTHONY – The Fremont County Republican Central Committee is tasked with recommending a replacement to fill a vacancy on the county’s board of commissioners.

L. Scott Kamachi, who was in the third year of his second term, passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer.

“We’re very sad about Scott. He’s been such a pillar in our community,” Chairwoman Shellie Blanchard tells EastIdahoNews.com.

The committee is now accepting applications to fill the remainder of his term, which is up for vote in 2026. Per Idaho statute, they have 10 days to nominate three candidates to fill the vacancy.

Gov. Brad Little will make the final decision, based on the local Republican party’s recommendations. He will interview each of the candidates and is required to fill the vacancy within 15 days of being notified.

“We have developed an application. It’s available at the courthouse. Everything goes through our central committee secretary, Tom Woodall,” Blanchard explains.

Qualifying candidates must be residents of Fremont County and at least 21 years of age. As of June 30, 2024, the annual salary for this position is $51,114, according to Transparent Idaho.

Those interested in applying have until Wednesday, March 19 at 5 p.m. to submit a cover letter and resume.

“The interview process will take place Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the St. Anthony City Council Chambers,” a committee member posted on its Facebook page Friday.

Those interviews are open to the public.

Blanchard is planning to submit the committee’s recommendations to the Governor on Friday, March 21. He is required to name a replacement by April 5.

“If he doesn’t pick a candidate (by that date), it comes back to the Fremont County Republican Central Committee and they name the candidate,” says Blanchard.

Applications can be sent to tom@woodall.lol.
