Man extradited to Utah from Spain to face charges of raping a girl in 2017

SALT LAKE CITY (KSL.com) — A man was extradited from Spain to Salt Lake City to face charges that allegedly occurred in 2017.
A girl reported to police that when she was 10 years old she was raped multiple times by Carlos Espino Farfan in West Valley City, according to a statement from the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. Investigators believe Farfan fled to Peru after the report, and then went to Spain.
On March 6, 2018, Farfan was charged in Utah’s 3rd District Court with sodomy on a child and four counts of rape of a child, first-degree felonies.
Farfan went to Spanish immigration authorities to request asylum in January 2024 and was taken into custody a few months later, according to the statement. An international extradition was initiated by the district attorney’s office and Farfan was turned over to U.S. authorities on Thursday.
Court records show he was booked into a Utah jail on Friday, and is scheduled for his first court appearance on Wednesday.
“Although justice was delayed for this young victim-survivor, it will not be denied. We appreciate the West Valley City Police Department for their diligent pursuit of the defendant over the last seven years,” District Attorney Sim Gill said.
He said he is proud of the work prosecutors did to coordinate with others and ensure Farfan would return to Utah to face the criminal charges.
West Valley City Police Chief Colleen Jacobs expressed gratitude the extradition has come through, thanking officers for their commitment to the girl.
“Their hard work and tenacity reflect the highest standards of law enforcement and the deep respect they have for those they serve,” she said in a statement.
The girl reported Farfan “had been touching her” daily between June and November of 2017 and related multiple instances of sexual abuse, according to charging documents.
