Police: Noncompliant sex offender Tased after trying to flee officers
Published at | Updated atREXBURG — A man is in the Madison County Jail facing multiple charges after an incident at a Rexburg gas station early Wednesday morning.
Officers made contact with 28-year-old Tanner Penrod at Conoco on University Boulevard around 2:30 a.m.
Rexburg Police Capt. Randy Lewis says officers learned Penrod is registered as a noncompliant sex offender and they noticed drug paraphernalia and syringes in Penrod’s car.
Lewis says officers attempted to take Penrod into custody, but he jumped into his car and tried to leave the gas station. Police deployed a Taser, and Penrod was arrested.
Investigators discovered several firearms and stolen property from Bonneville County in Penrod’s vehicle, according to Lewis.
Penrod was arrested on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, attempting to flee, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possessing stolen property.
Penrod pleaded guilty to a Madison County statutory rape charge in 2008 and was ordered to register as a sex offender.
He also pleaded guilty to two Madison County felony burglary charges in 2008, a felony burglary charge in 2011, a grand theft charge in 2011, and a 2011 felony eluding a police officer charge in Bonneville County.
