IDAHO FALLS — A 21‐year‐old man is facing a battery charge after he allegedly struck an officer in the face.

Officers responded to a home on the 100 block of Seventh Street for a report of a possible overdose around 1:00 p.m. Thursday. Officers and EMS made contact with Avery B. Tusch, of Idaho Falls, who was believed to be highly intoxicated. First responders were also made aware that Tusch possibly ingested several pills of ibuprofen.

Tusch refused to be transported to the hospital for treatment. Given the circumstances and his potential to hurt himself, officers chose to take him into protective custody.

Police said as they tried to place him in custody, Tusch became combative and actively resisted.

During the confrontation, Tusch allegedly hit an officer on the left side of the face. Police said he also grabbed an officer around the neck and put him into a choke hold. Another officer helped free the officer from Tusch.

Once officers gained control of Tusch, they placed him into custody. He was later taken to the hospital for treatment. Doctors cleared Tusch as being stable enough to be housed in the Bonneville County Jail.

Tusch was booked on a felony battery on an officer. No bond was set as of Friday morning.
