Rodeo queens are passionate about keeping the Western way of life, but they are also experts at having perfect makeup and hair under their cowgirl hats. Looking primped, professional and ready to ride is a part of their rodeo queen title.

Ever wondered how they keep a crisp look while having to get on a horse and perform a flawless routine?

Here are some quick tips from Miss Rodeo Idaho 2017, Hunter Rae Rackham, who was the second runner-up in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant that year.

Don’t be afraid to rock big, bouncy curls

“I use a good heat protectant,” she says.

Rackham also uses a quarter-inch curling iron to achieve her look. She sprays her hair with a curling spray and after each curl is formed with the iron she pins the curl and lets it cool. She finishes off the look with a holding spray like Got2b Glued.

Get good makeup setting spray

Rackham said this is essential in keeping your makeup from melting and lasting hours. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray is a favorite for many and can be found online or at your local Sephora. She also says a primer for both eyeshadow and foundation can help in keeping an all-day finish.

Keep a pearly smile

Not everyone can have a shot at being a rodeo queen, but to those who are she says, “Remember the purpose behind you being a rodeo queen and THAT will keep the sparkle in our smile. Knowing that you never get a second chance to make a first impression is important.”

She keeps her smile sparkly through regular dental checkups and brushing and flossing.

Keep a mini beauty emergency kit

Rackham says keep your hands clean to keep from getting stains on your clothes.

But stains happen, so “keep a hat brush and a Tide pen handy for those ‘oops’ moments,” she says.

She also says keep a comb, mints, and a favorite go-to lip-color to keep your look vibrant and fresh.
