BYU-Idaho announces fall commencement details, including keynote speaker

REXBURG — Once again, thousands of college students who are graduating fall semester will celebrate their years of hard work with an online graduation ceremony.
Brigham Young University-Idaho announced Thursday morning that the university will broadcast an online commencement service on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. There will be 2,655 graduates with 2,035 earning their bachelor’s degrees and 620 receiving their associate degrees, according to BYU-Idaho news release.
Of the graduates, the university says 1,640 are women and 1,015 are men. Campus-based students make up 1,869 of the fall semester graduates, while 786 of the graduates are online students.
As part of the commencement, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will speak. Bednar has been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since Oct. 7, 2004. He earned degrees from Brigham Young University and Purdue University and was a professor of business management at Texas Tech University and at the University of Arkansas. From 1997–2004, he served as president of BYU-Idaho.
Bednar will be joined by General Authority Seventy and Church Educational System Commissioner Elder Paul V. Johnson.
“As graduates join us in this commencement service virtually, we encourage them to gather with their families, celebrate, take pictures, and share in their achievement,” a BYU-Idaho news release says. “We commend and congratulate each graduate and hope you will join us virtually in this unique experience.”

BYU-Idaho had no further comment regarding the upcoming ceremony.
