Teen in custody after alleged gun threat at local high school
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — Authorities are investigating a disturbance that happened at Bonneville High School Tuesday afternoon.
A news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office says a student with a handgun was reported to have been seen on video making threats to another student just after 1 p.m.
Administrators locked the exterior doors as a safety precaution.
“We were in a hall check,” Bonneville High School Principal Levi Owen says.
A hall check is different than a lockdown. Owen says it allows teachers to continue operating normally while ensuring no one is in the hallway or entering the building.
The alleged threat did not happen on campus, but Owen says a major reason for the hall check was so the students involved wouldn’t be able to get in and endanger others.
Deputies quickly identified the students. The hall check was lifted right before 3:30 p.m.
The sheriff’s office reports the suspect was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center on Wednesday for “threatening violence on school grounds and disturbing the peace.” Since the suspect is a minor, his name will not be released.
“Because students reacted quickly and were proactive in reporting this information, school staff and deputies were able to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the campus,” a news release from the sheriff’s office says.
Deputies have dealt with the situation and there are no further safety concerns related to this incident.
“We really appreciate how quickly the sheriff’s office coordinates these types of things with us and works to keep everybody safe,” Owen says.
