Bear Lake High football player writes team’s game stories for school paper

MONTPELIER — Nolan George is a junior at Bear Lake High School. He is an aspiring engineer who is a three-sport athlete for the Bears and also writes for the school paper.
When asked if there is anything many of his classmates may not know about him, George said that after playing the Bear Lake football team games, he writes the game stories for the school paper.
“Not too many people know because nobody reads newspapers anymore,” he said with a smile. “It’s cool to see (my byline) in the paper.”
George told EastIdahoNews.com that playing in the game, at center and defensive tackle, gives him a unique vantage for his write-ups, and he tries to tell the story from that viewpoint.
“I try to take advantage and describe it more from an on-the-field perspective,” he said.
George is also on the wrestling team and the track team — for which he throws the shot put and discus.
He joined the track team as a sophomore but has been on the wrestling team since he got to high school and has played football since kindergarten. It is the ability to hit people without getting into trouble that keeps George coming back to the football field and wrestling gym year after year. Though, being part of a team, with one combined goal in mind, is a big part of it as well.
“I love being able to work together with the team,” he said. “When we win games, that’s how we know we were able to work together well.”
When high school is done, George said his athletic career will be as well. After graduation, he plans on serving an LDS mission before going to college.
Asked where he would like to serve his mission, George said he has no specific preference but that he would like to go abroad and gain experiences he can’t get at home.
“I don’t really have anywhere specific, just somewhere not in the United States,” he said.
While he has not decided on a college yet, either — though he is considering University of Idaho and Utah State University — he does know that engineering would be the goal.
His passion for math and science, George said, is a combination that lends itself nicely to a career in engineering. And the joy he takes in drawing may come in handy as well.
Be it for college or a mission, George knows his time to leave Bear Lake High School and potentially the town of Montpelier is approaching. When that time comes, he believes it is the closeness of the town and school — everyone knowing everyone — that he will miss most.
And, at school specifically, it will be the experience of attending school functions — like dances and sporting events — that he will miss most.
“Just to be supportive and be involved, that’s the best part (of high school).”
