AMMON – A longtime mattress and furniture store opened its brand new location last month.

Romaine’s Mattress King moved from its old 17,000-square-foot shop at 401 E Street in downtown Idaho Falls to a new 30,000-square-foot building at 563 South 25th East in Ammon.

It had a soft opening Sept. 2 but the grand opening is Friday, Oct. 27.

Though there isn’t any new inventory, owner Jake Heaton tells EastIdahoNews.com they’re able to display it all in one showroom. It seems new to some customers because many weren’t aware they had furniture at the old store.

“A lot of people are noticing we carry sofas, love seats, bedroom sets. We have TVs as well — including Samsung home theater systems,” Heaton says.

Aside from mattresses, Heaton says the most popular item is living room furniture.

Heaton is the grandson of the original owners, Don and Romaine, for whom the business is named. The Heatons bought the downtown property in 1959.

Jake says his grandparents merged an old service station, grocery store, steel shop and two other buildings into what it is now. The couple was looking to go into business, and their concept was much simpler back then.

“My grandma would make these little felt plants and paintings. That’s when they decided to get into unfinished furniture with their paint,” Jake says.

Ultimately, the Heatons decided to specialize in mattresses.

Don and Romaine operated the shop for about 40 years before selling the business to their son, Carey, in the late 1990s.

Jake has worked in the business with his dad since he was 14, and he became part owner about nine years ago.

The most rewarding aspect of the business for him is being able to help customers get a better night’s sleep.

The downtown building is now completely empty and has been listed for sale.

And if you’re thinking the move to a new location means everything costs more, Heaton says that’s not the case.

“After selling multiple properties, we actually have less overhead costs now, so we’ll actually be able to pass out better deals at this place than we were downtown. We really haven’t changed and we’re very excited,” he says.

Heaton and his team will celebrate the opening of their new location on Friday with a ribbon-cutting. As part of the event, people can enter into a drawing for a $10,000 king size Tempur-Pedic adjustable mattress, along with $500 and $1,000 gift cards and in-store discounts.

The Tempur-Pedic mattress will be awarded on black Friday.

“We want more people to be able to enter (and have a chance to win),” Heaton explains.

Romaine’s Mattress King is open Monday thru Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
