Special needs trunk or treat events planned

IDAHO FALLS — Sensory-friendly trunk or treat events have been planned in several eastern Idaho communities for those with special needs and their families.

Many children with special needs struggle with traditional Halloween events due to the crowds, the uncertainty of their surroundings or other restrictions. Special needs events give them a safe, non-threatening environment in which to enjoy Halloween.

Here are two event EastIdahoNews.com has received information about:

Pocatello

On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Portneuf District Library will host the 6th Annual Trunk or Treat for children and adults with special needs and their families. 

Individuals with severe food allergies or other dietary restrictions are also encouraged to attend. Those planning on attending can arrive any time between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and enjoy candy alternatives, treats, special guests, games and other activities. 
 
The event is free, but tickets are required for each family. Tickets are available in advance and on the day of the event at the Portneuf Library, various elementary schools and therapy agencies.

Idaho Falls

Camp Hayden is hosting its 4th Annual Special Needs Trunk or Treat at The Development Workshop in Idaho Falls. This accessible trunk or treat is for children and adults with disabilities and their families. It will be held at 555 West 25th Street on Oct. 28 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This event is free, thanks to the support of Camp Hayden donors and DWI, who has donated the use DWI building and is providing some volunteers for the event.

Participants are invited to dress up and “trick or treat” at all the car trunks who will be set up to give out candy and non-edible items (for those with dietary restrictions) in the parking lot outside the event center.

There will also be an accessible Haunted Sensory Event inside the building, which will cater to the needs of the special needs community.
