Sugar-Salem senior sets girl’s soccer records, commits to CSI

SUGAR CITY — Dakota Weekes is a senior at Sugar-Salem High School. This year, she broke her school’s record for soccer assists in a season — breaking the school record for career assists along the way.
She was named Player of the Year in the Mountain Rivers Conference after leading the Diggers to a perfect 21-0 season and a State Championship — scoring the championship match’s lone goal.
The championship goal, Weekes said, found its way through a tight window to the back of the net in just the eighth minute of the match.
“We had the whole rest of the game to hold the lead,” she recalled. “When that final whistle blew, I was in shock, in tears, I couldn’t believe it happened.”
Weekes signed her letter of intent to play for the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls Thursday.
She told EastIdahoNews.com she chose CSI because of its history of fielding competitive sports teams, among other reasons.
“(The women’s soccer teams is) a brand new program,” she said. “It will be really cool to be a part of that.”
After losing in the district title game last year (their first loss of the season), Weekes said her team and coach refocused on everyone working together — “holding the rope,” she said.
This year, her last at the high school level, Weekes did her part, scoring 19 goals and recording 24 assists — breaking the previous school record of 21 assists. Her 52 career assists smashed the previous school record of 39.
She hopes to do the same as a part of CSI’s newly-developed women’s soccer team. Then, it would be a “dream come true” to play at Idaho State University.
“If all plays out well, I’d like to play Division II or Division I after. I’d like to get a bachelor’s degree from a university,” she said. “Honestly, I’ve never really thought about any other schools.”
Weekes plans to major in business and entrepreneurship before returning to Sugar City to open a salon in her hometown. Part of the reason she wants to return is to continue coaching the youth teams she coaches now.
