Tapp, 47, was wrongfully convicted in 1997 for the rape and murder of 18-year-old Angie Dodge. He tried multiple times to appeal the conviction and it was later discovered his DNA did not match DNA at the crime scene. He was eventually released from prison in 2017 and exonerated in 2019 when investigators arrested 54-year-old Brian Dripps.
“After Chris was released from prison, he worked hard to integrate himself back into society. He immediately began advocating for the wrongfully convicted,” his obituary says. “Chris was the first person in known history to be exonerated by using ‘Genetic Geneology’ research, while doing so Chris’s case opened the door for many other unsolved murder cases to be solved by using Genetic Geneology.”
