Obituary
Duston Cureton
October 4th, 1951 - November 23rd, 2024
Duston “Dusty” Lewis Cureton, 73, was taken home on November 23, 2024.
Dusty was born on October 4, 1951, in Odessa, Missouri, to Lewis Simmons and Helen Marie Thomas Simmons. When he was nine, Robert Hail Cureton married Helen Marie Thomas Cureton. Dusty grew up in Creswell, Oregon, until his family relocated to Rexburg, Idaho, in December 1969.
He graduated from Madison High School in 1970 and briefly attended Ricks College. He served in the Army National Guard for six years.
Shortly after graduating from High School, he met his sweet wife, Gwen Garner, and they were married on October 29, 1971. They have been happily married for 53 years and raised their three sons—Duston Dana, Tracey Ray, and Jared Gale—in Rexburg, Idaho.
Dusty learned many trades, including roofing and trucking, which led him to Madison County. He eventually became the Madison County Superintendent for Road and Bridge, where he retired in 2008 after 32 years. Just because he retired, he still wanted to be busy, so he worked part time for Idaho Fish and Game and the City of Sugar City.
He enjoyed fishing (especially steelhead fishing), hunting, camping, welding, painting, and woodworking. During his retirement years, he also enjoyed metalwork, fly tying, making handcrafted lures, gardening, knife making, and serving his neighbors.
His number one ambition was his family. He often said, “If he didn’t have his family, he wouldn’t have anything.” He passed all his hobbies and skills onto his 9 grandkids and 4 great grandkids. They shared their hobbies with him as he attended wrestling, football, dance recitals, lunch dates, and shopping excursions.
Dusty was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings. One of his favorite callings was spending time with the scouts in his ward. He frequently shared his experience of when he knew the Book of Mormon was true and often testified of this with a strong conviction.
Dusty’s wit and dry sense of humor always made others laugh and feel welcome. It put people at ease. He was a son, brother, husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle, friend, and for those who knew him best, “Crab”.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen. His brothers William Cureton, Edwin Kennedy, and Matt Cureton. His sisters Cindy Cureton and Barbara Scherf. His children Duston (Camille) Cureton, Tracey Ray Cureton, and Jared Gale Cureton. His grandchildren: Cody Ray (Brittany) Cureton, Caleb Robert (Mayci) Cureton, Gavin Ray Cureton, Cassidy Tonille Cureton, Gailynn Elizabeth Cureton, Jonah Hail Cureton, Isabelle Marie Cureton, Jeffrey Michael Cureton, and Miles Jacob Cureton. His great-grandchildren: Lyla Annille Cureton, Lainey Lee Cureton, Willow Marie Cureton, and Crimson Maeve Cureton. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Hail and Helen Marie Cureton and his brother Francis Kimball Cureton.
He will be missed by all those who knew him and whose lives he touched.
The services will be held November 30, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Rexburg Stake Center located at 845 West 7th South. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm at Flamm Funeral Home and Saturday from 10:00 am until 10:45 am at the Stake Center. Burial will be at the Rexburg Cemetery.
