Harry Guelzow, age 80, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2024.

Our hearts are heavy with grief by the loss of a dear husband, father, grandpa, and friend to all those who knew him.

Harry was born and raised in Idaho Falls. As a young boy, Harry’s family struggled to make ends meet. He never forgot how his dear mother, Lydia Hoover Guelzow, worked to keep her seven children clothed and fed. He carried this childhood experience with him into his adult years and generously gave to various charities, especially those that reduced child hunger and benefited animals. If anyone questioned his numerous contributions, he simply stated, “You don’t know what it’s like to go hungry.” Harry gave from the pocket because he could, but more so from his heart because he had lived it.

Harry’s empathy was further expressed by his participation in the Democratic Party. He believed that everyone deserved the opportunity to improve their lot in life and a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work. He served as a Precinct Chairman and dedicated hours of his time at the Democratic Headquarters supporting candidates by making calls, sending out letters, putting up signs, or going door to door.

Harry was dedicated to his 30-year career for the Union Pacific Railroad, working through the ranks from Switchman to the position of Conductor. He was a proud member of the oldest union in Idaho, The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

Even though railroad life was very strict with schedules, when off duty, he was on Harry Time. Hence, his friends gave him the nickname Harry “Go-Slow” in place of “Guelzow.” After retirement, his morning ritual was a cup of coffee and the Post Register. No schedules or deadlines to meet, just Harry Time.

Harry thought he would remain a bachelor his entire life. That was until he met Loretta Day at the Idaho Falls Care Center where Loretta worked at the time. She swept him off his feet and they were married on September 13, 2002. At this later stage in life, Harry adopted and was adopted by his new family. Harry loved well and was well loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, and later great grandchildren. Harry had many interests throughout his life. He enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, fishing, and golfing. He liked to punish a little white ball for 9 holes and called it fun. He was a better than average golfer. He enjoyed Corvettes and was a member of the local Corvette Club. For most of his adult life, Harry was also a member of the Eagles Lodge. It isn’t always true of others, and some struggle to be on the right side of the line, but for Harry, it came naturally and he was truly One of the Good Guys. He was a great man and has left behind a great legacy. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Harry is survived by his wife, Loretta Guelzow; his children: Mitch (Lorraine) Day, Greg (Lisa) Day, Ryan (Lynnae) Day, Andrea (Dave) Fortner; his 7 grandchildren: Sydni, Trad, Jaron, Matthew, Lyndsey, Samantha, Shania; and 6 great grandchildren.

Harry’s family would like to thank Hospice Care of Eastern Idaho and MorningStar Senior Living of Idaho Falls for their excellent care and understanding.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local food bank.

A private Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at a later date.
