James Richard “Jim” Burt, 77, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Idaho Falls Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. A man of many talents and unwavering dedication, Jim’s life was a testament to service, innovation, and family.

Early Life and Education

Born on September 1, 1946, in Portland, Oregon, to Richard Dale Burt and Wanda Juanita Smith Burt, Jim embraced the adventurous life of a military child. His formative years were spent traversing the globe, experiencing diverse cultures and education systems. Despite the constant change, Jim’s adaptability shone through as he completed his high school education at David Douglas High School in Portland, Oregon. His thirst for knowledge led him to further studies at Oregon Polytechnic Institute.

Military Career and Professional Achievements

Jim’s commitment to service manifested in a distinguished 20 plus-year career with the United States Army. As a decorated Special Forces Combat Medic, he proudly wore the Green Beret, embodying the elite unit’s values of courage, loyalty, and excellence. His missions took him across the world where he dedicated himself to protecting and liberating those in need. Beyond his military service, Jim’s innovative spirit flourished in his work as a Mechanical Engineer. His brilliance as an inventor led to the creation of the world’s fastest coin counter of its time and resulted in three patents to his name. Jim’s ingenuity and problem-solving skills left an indelible mark on the field of engineering.

Family Life

On June 22, 1968, Jim married the love of his life, Sharron Kay Kirby, in Fort Benning, Georgia. Together, they built a loving home in Portland, Oregon, where they raised their children before relocating to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 2003. Jim’s devotion to his family was evident in every aspect of his life.

Faith and Hobbies

A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jim’s faith played a central role in his life. He served a mission at the Church History Center, sharing his passion for spiritual growth and historical preservation. In his leisure time, Jim found joy in the company of his family, the tranquility of fishing, and in researching genealogy. However, it was in his woodshop where his creativity truly flourished, crafting remarkable pieces that showcased his skill and imagination.

Legacy

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sharron Kay Burt of Idaho Falls; his children: Nari Ann Burt-Mendenhall, Joseph M. (Rachelle) Burt, Kimberly Jean (Brian) Burt-Turner, and Bethany Michelle (Steve) Burt-Barrow; his siblings: Steffanie (Tom) Maloney, Rhonda Smith, Monica (Delbert) Bartrum, and Donald (Roberta) Burt; 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Wanda Burt, and his brothers, Stevan Michael Burt and John Robert Burt.

Services

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation hours on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services, both at the funeral home. Jim will be laid to rest with full military honors at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. Services will be broadcast live at www.woodfuneralhome.com
